US to dominate midstream project starts in North America through 2025, forecasts GlobalData
The US is likely to start the operations of 169 midstream oil and gas projects from 2021 - 2025, accounting for about 69% of the total upcoming midstream project starts in North America by 2025, finds GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
GlobalData’s latest report, ‘North America Midstream New Build and Expansion Projects Outlook, 2021–2025’ reveals that out of 169 projects expected to commence operations in the US, trunk/transmission pipelines projects would be the highest at 73, followed by gas processing and liquids storage 37 and 36, respectively.
Bhargavi Gandham, Oil & Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The US is one of the largest consumers and exporters of oil and gas globally. Plans to export abundant shale gas resources as LNG, coupled ramping-up of infrastructure to meet domestic oil and gas demand are driving growth of the midstream sector in the country.”
Among the midstream segments, pipelines projects would constitute around 43% of all midstream projects’ starts in the US during the outlook period 2021 to 2025.
Capline Reversal, and Companero are some of the key pipelines’ projects with a length of 1036.2 km and 876.6 km, respectively. The two projects are expected to start operations in 2022, and 2023, respectively.
GlobalData also notes that gas processing projects would constitute around 22% of all midstream projects’ starts in the US during the period 2021 to 2025. Among the upcoming gas processing projects, Smithburg II-VI, and Bighorn lead with a gas processing capacity of 1.0 billion ft3/d each. Both these projects are expected to start operations in 2024.
Among the liquids storage projects, Plaquemines I, which is in construction stage, and Jones Creek III, which is in feasibility stage lead with liquid storage capacities of 20 million bbls, and 15 million bbls, respectively. Both these projects are expected to start operations in 2022.
