Oil Crisis Highlights Hurdles Facing Energy Transition
The global energy crisis underscores the difficulties of the transition to green energy, Greenwood Energy's Guido Patrignani tells WSJ. "Renewables never replace fossil completely," he says. In a sign that the crisis weakens the push for renewables, WSJ reported separately that some banks are now underwriting more oil-and-gas debt than green debt, after years seen faster growth in financing for clean energy. Industry experts say fossil fuels are key to ensure uninterrupted supply of power, since solar and wind alternatives are inconstant. "A country needs a reliable base, which is usually fossil fuel," Patrignani says.
